Naturally Fab: @PiecesOfNika

What is your name and where are you from?
My name is Nika. I am from Monroe , Louisiana , and I currently live in Shreveport , Louisiana

•What are your reasons for going natural?
I started out natural until the age of 10 yrs old. I got my first relaxer at the age of 11 yrs. old. I choose to return back to my natural tresses on September 24, 2011. I didn't like my relaxed hair because it was very very thin. It never held a curl, and it would literally be stuck to my head from chemical burns. I hated that.

•How did you transition (or did you BC)?
I didn't want to go through chemicals burns anymore so I chose to transition for 7 months from February 5, 2011 to September 24, 2011, and I did the big chop. I really enjoyed my short natural hair. It was so easy to manage. I just did wash n go's. Now that my hair is longer it stays defined longer too. I'm so glad I chose to go natural.

•What emotional struggles, if any, have you faced since going natural?
In the beginning of my natural journey I struggled to find what works for my hair, and it was dry all the time. I’ve finally found what works for my hair, and I stick with what works.

•What's your go-to style?
When my hair was short I only wore it out with a head band. Since my hair is longer I wear high buns, twistouts, braidouts, and flat twistouts. My favorite go-to style of them all is the high bun.

•What’s your favorite product and why?
I love Extra Virgin Olive oil to seal in the moisture because it penetrates the hair strand, and it leaves my hair so soft. I also use Aubrey Organics Aloe Vera juice to seal the moisture in my hair.  I love Giovanni Smooth as Silk Conditioner and VO5 Kiwi Lime Squeeze Clarifying Conditioner because they have great slip, and they leave my hair very soft, shiny and defined. I also love Eco Styler Argan oil gel because it lays my edges down really well. As long as I have these products a conditioner, an oil, aloe vera juice and a gel for these edges. I’m good to go because I use the Giovanni or VO5 conditioner as a co-wash and a leave in. I would apply the olive oil or aloe vera juice to seal, the gel on my edges, and I could be out the door. I’m all about simplicity!

•What piece of advice would you share with someone who is just starting out?
My best hair advice is don’t use a lot of heat,  keep your hair trimmed when needed, keep your hair moisturized, keep your scalp clean, andyour hair will grow. My best advice to anyone who is considering going natural is do not let the negative opinions from others stop you. You will have people that don’t like your hair, but just let them know that you like it and that’s all that matters. People will always have negative opinions whether you are relaxed or natural. I pay them no mind. So if you are thinking about going natural go for it, and you won’t regret it.
