Living No Lye - Taylor (FreeYourRoots)
What are your reasons for going natural? How did you transition (or did you BC)?
I've been natural since my sophomore year of high school! Let's figure up the math on that lol It's been 9 years! I can remember vividly going in the bathroom, tired of my relaxed hair, and chopping it off with scissors! Then I remember the best feeling of freedom afterwards. I was only like 16 so my mom called everyone and told them that I chopped my hair off lol They couldn't believe that I'd cut my hair off! The relaxed part was so thin and damaged so it was time. I never dealt with any negativity concerning my hair from my family! It was a little different being at school when natural hair wasn't popular. People often looked at me like I was undone. I remember a teacher asking me why I didn't comb my hair because it was in a puff lol I thought it was cute!
What emotional struggles, if any, have you faced since going natural?
The most memorable part of my journey has been my two big chops after the first one. Sometimes I wonder how long my hair would be if I wouldn't have cut it off. I had locs for a year but decided that I wanted my afro back, so I cut them! Outside of that it's always great to be able to help someone else embrace who they are. I've had people say that I helped them make the choice to be natural and that's priceless to me!
What’s your favorite part about being natural and why?
The thing that I love most about my hair is the versatility! There aren't any limits to what my hair can do! I've had locs, color, twistouts, EVERYTHING! An area that I've been working on restoring lately has been my edges. Like most women, we pull over time not realizing the damage that we can later cause so I'm taking a break from all the tension!
What are your hair goals?
My hair goal is just for my strands to be healthy and well moisturized! I have lots of shrinkage but the growth is noticeable. Not gone lie, a shoulder length twistout (shrinkage included) is something that I want to see!
What is your current hair regimen?
I currently rinse with apple cider vinegar maybe twice a month. I moisturize my hair with black castor oil and other essential oils. Haven't found a product that I'm absolutely sold on so I've just started to create my own.
I make sure that my ends are staying trimmed. I've heard so many people say that naturals don't need trims but we do! Hair is hair and no matter what form, it splits. My hair also has to be moisturized from root to strand. Crochet braids are definitely my go to protective style right now! I've seen so much growth and they are very versatile!
What piece of advice would you share with someone who is just starting out?
To the readers, my best advice to you all is to not be afraid of embracing your coils and kinks! Someone else is looking at you as beautiful and desiring your hair! I know the journey gets frustrating sometimes but it's worth it! We ultimately get to be who we were created to be!
