Babassu Oil: It Just Might Change Your Hair!

by Ebony Clark-Bomani

If you are allergic to, dislike, hate or despise coconut oil, you might want to consider another option: Babassu Oil. Similar to coconut oil, babassu oil is extracted from a kernel of the palm tree family, the babassu palm. Although the two have similar molecular structures, babassu oil is more absorbent and does not leave you feeling excessively greasy. Unlike coconut oil, it is also said that babassu oil is non-comedogenic---which means, it won't clog your pores. The oil is high in lauric and myristic acids and contains glucosides, vitamins and minerals that help to soften the hair. Babassu is highly nourishing, helps retain moisture and restores hair's strength and elasticity. Try adding it to your hair regimen. Your hair will become more lustrous and more resilient than ever!

Use as a Pre-Treatment (Pre-Poo): Massage a generous amount of babassu oil into your scalp and smooth onto the hair. Cover with a plastic cap and process for 30 minutes under a hooded dryer or thermal cap, or 45 minutes without heat. Rinse hair with warm water, shampoo thoroughly, condition, moisturize and style.

Use as a Hydrating Masque: After shampooing, add one teaspoon of babassu oil to a palm full of your favorite silicone-free conditioner. Apply the masque from mid-strands to ends, cover with a plastic cap and process for 15-20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly, moisturize, and style.

*With consistent use of this super emollient oil, your hair will transform into a healthier version of itself. *(As with all things, discontinue use if rash, irritation, or allergic reaction occurs.)

Is babassu oil a regular staple in your hair care routine? Let us know what you think about it?
