DIY: Marshmallow Root Leave-In Detangler

by Ebony Clark-Bomani

This recipe has to be the BEST leave-in detangler that I have ever used. Marshmallow root is an African plant that has been around for centuries! The leaves and roots have medicinal properties since they are considered to be antibacterial. Marshmallow root has mucilage, which is a gel-like substance, that becomes slippery when it's wet---which contributes to its detangling benefits. The slipperiness will help to remove knots and tangles from the hair, causing it to be more manageable when styling. Therefore, you can achieve more polished styles. Here's how to make this fabulous detangler.

You'll need:

1 spray bottle, three cups of purified water, 3 tablespoons of marshmallow root, 1 teaspoon of slippery elm powder, your choice of an essential oil, your favorite carrier oil, vitamin E.

How to:

Bring three cups of water to a low simmer, add marshmallow root and slippery elm. Simmer mixture on low for about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool. Once cooled, strain herbs completely. Fill 1/4 of your spray bottle with purified water, add strained marshmallow root mix, 1 teaspoon of carrier oil, 20 drops of essential oil, and 20 drops of vitamin E oil. Shake well, and ENJOY!

I use this mixture right after conditioning, prior to styling. Let us know if you've used something similar or if you try this.
