Pre-Pooing Your Tresses

Why should you pre-poo? The purpose of pre-pooing is to prepare your hair for the harsh conditions of washing/shampooing your hair.  When you wash your hair, shampoo can strip a lot of the essential oils and moisture from your scalp and hair.  To lessen that effect and protect your hair, you add a pre-poo to your shampoo regimen.  When you apply your pre-poo treatment to dry hair before you wash, your hair and scalp acts as a sponge absorbing essential oils and moisture before you wash away excess product build up. As a result, your hair feels a lot softer and healthier after going through your whole shampoo/condition/deep condition and styling regimen.

What do people use for pre-poo treatments? You have many options! Consider natural oils like coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, or argan oil. I specifically mentioned these oils because they absorb really well into your hair (as opposed to other oils that operate more as a sealant than anything else). You can also consider using light conditioners like Suave Coconut Conditioner, Herbal Essence moisturizing conditioners or VO5 conditioners. The great thing about pre-pooing is that you are not limited to certain products – you can even make a homemade concoction that will be moisturizing for your scalp and your hair. Whatever you choose to use, always be mindful of the product ingredients so that your tresses do not go through unnecessary stress or damage from a harmful product.

How to Pre-Poo: It is really easy to pre-poo. All you have to do is apply a reasonable amount of your product of choice into dry (not wet) hair and allow it to saturate your scalp and tresses thoroughly. Tie your hair up or put it up in a plastic cap or towel for 15-30 minutes before washing your hair.

All in all, there is no perfect science to pre-pooing. Have fun experimenting with the best pre-poo ingredients for your hair, and love how your hair feels and looks afterwards!
