Living No Lye: Samantha (Ahfro Baang)
By Sumetra Reed
Q: What were your reasons for going natural?
A: I went natural because I was inspired after seeing a close friend's natural hair health. I was getting really tired of relaxing and had started to experience breakage and dry hair.
Q: How did you transition (or did you BC)?
A: I transitioned into natural hair by growing my hair out and trimming, but eventually I chopped most of my hair off and grew it out.
Q: What emotional struggles, if any, have you faced since going natural?
A: I haven't had any, honestly. At the time I went natural, there weren't many other naturals, so it wasn't a "thing" or about a struggle or movement. I was just simply embracing the fact that I was enjoying my hair in it's natural state.
Q: What's your go-to style?
A: My go-to style is a high bun. Between twist outs and wash and go's I like to give my hair a rest. Buns are such an easy, chic style that just works really well for me.
Q: What’s your favorite product and why?
A: One? I couldn't possibly name one, but a few brands that I love include the Curls brand, Shea Moisture, Bain de Terre and AG Hair. I'm huge on curl creams too and the Curls 'Creme Brûlée' is definitely a staple for me!
Q: What piece of advice would you share with someone who is just starting out?
A: Be patient. It's about learning what YOUR hair requires and focusing on that. You can use other bloggers and naturals as a guide but it's essentially about learning what works for your hair, and once you do, your hair will do whatever it is you want it to.
