Living No Lye: Jasmine (jd_winters)

Q: What were your reasons for going natural?
A: I really wanted to try something different, I didn’t have a real reason as for why, but I did do my research before by looking up pictures, and I was in love. My stylist at that time helped me out by telling me about getting it round brushed, and my hair will still have that perm look to it, so after that I was sold.
Q: How did you transition (or did you BC)?
A: My stylist helped me transition for about 8 months, by having it round brushed until I was ready for my big chop. I also did protective styles as well, like senagalese twist, and other protective styles. It was after my senagalese twist that I big chopped. I was so anxious that I took my twist down after the 3 months, and then I just started cutting, and I actually cut too much, I didn’t know the difference between what needed to be cut, and what was my natural pattern, I was all confused. After cutting, my hair was a horrifying mess, so I ran out and purchased a wig, and then called up My Natural Resources to book an appointment asap. I wish I remembered who shaped me up, because she did an excellent job. After My Natural Resources shaped me up, it was then when I was fully natural, and begin my natural hair journey.
Q: What emotional struggles, if any, have you faced since going natural?
A: Honestly, I really didn’t have any emotional struggles when I went natural. When I first chopped off my hair, I hated it at first because I wasn’t use to it, but after going out and rocking my twa by jazzing it up with makeup up, earrings, and a slight change in my wardrobe, I was good to go. My family didn’t really care for it at first, but when they saw how confident I was, and me finally figuring out how to do a nice style to it (twist-out), they loved it.
Q: What's your go-to style?
A: My go-to style is a twist out. I love a twist out because it’s simple, and compliments my style.
Q: What’s your favorite product and why?
A: My favorite product right now is Super Soft Butter Blend by Truly You Curls. I love this product because I am a stickler when it comes to moisture, because my hair is colored, and it tends to get dryer faster. I use this product for a pre-poo and also for all my styles. It smells great and keeps my hair unbelievably soft.
Q: What piece of advice would you share with someone who is just starting out?
A: What I tell women when they ask, is to remain patient. I myself thought that going natural was easy. I was wrong at first, but that was just the beginning, because it took time to learn my hair, and what works best for it. It became easy over time, but patience is truly a virtue, so embrace that twa, and own it!
