Living No Lye - Janae (nae2curly)
By Sumetra Reed
Q: What were your reasons for going natural?
A: My reasons for going natural was to experience the versatility of my hair.
Q: How did you transition (or did you BC)?
A: My story is a little different from most. I only applied relaxer to my edges because they were unruly. The rest of my hair was relaxer free, long and healthy. My sophomore year of college I decided to grow out the relaxer which didn't take long.
Q: What emotional struggles, if any, have you faced since going natural?
A: My emotional struggle was stress from school which caused me to pull on the ends of my hair. As a result my hair became unhealthy, weak and brittle. It shows that heat isn't the only damaging contributor to the hair. My hair should be way longer but I allowed stress to take over. I am happy to say that my hair is back to its healthy state.
Q: What's your go-to style?
A: My go-to style would be the twist and curl, two flat twists and a high puff.
Q: What’s your favorite product and why?
A: My favorite products are the following:
Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea CoWash, As I Am CoWash, Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Shampoo, and Creme of Nautre Ultra Moisturizing Shampoo.
Carol's Daughter Monoi Repairing Hair Mask, Black Vanilla Conditioner, Sacred Tiare Conditioner and Cupuacu Hair Maskbecause it provides strength to my strands and my curls really come to live!
Mizani Moisturfuse Silk Cream Conditioner because of the thickness and moisture is gives to my hair.
Cantu Shea Butter deep treatment masque because of the great slip and moisture.

Q: What piece of advice would you share with someone who is just starting out?
A: Get to know what YOUR hair needs. Follow or subscribe to someone who has the same or similar textures to yours. Find styles that work best for YOUR hair. NEVER get discouraged if you don’t master a style the first or second time. LOVE YOUR HAIR! Be your own hair inspiration!
