Curls for a Cause Recap

By Tiffany Nichols and Sumetra Reed

On Saturday September 19,2014, the Natural Hair Community came together for a special night of celebration at the Curls for a Cause event for Chicago based vlogger Meechy Monroe. Meechy and her sister Vaughn of MsVaughnTV are a Chicago based Beauty and Natural Hair Vlogger duo called “The Monroe Sisters”. Meechy and Vaughn have contributed so much to the natural hair community with their creative YouTube hair tutorials, style, and beauty videos, they have hosted  and organized tons of beauty events around the world, and have worked as brand ambassador for several top beauty brands.

This past May, Meechy Monroe was diagnosed with a rare sarcoma (a vascular cancerous tumor) in her brain. She has battled and risen above two brain surgeries, multiple strokes, and she just recently received her last round of chemotherapy. Even through all of this, Meechy is still contributing to the Natural Hair Community by sharing her road to recovery on her website www.MeechyMonroe.com and by continuing to be a light of hope to others battling with cancer or any other type of illness.  Her resilience is inspiring to so many.

Her story was so inspiring, Constance Cash, Editor-in-Chief of I Am Team Natural and founder of Team Natural, LLC, wanted to do something to give back to someone who has given others so much. Curls for a Cause was quickly created and organized with the intent of raising money to assist with Meechy Monroe’s mounting medical expenses. The event was held at The Backroom located in Chicago, IL.

This event was definitely one to remember as many of Meechy's family members and friends were in attendance and a lot of her Chicago based supporters came out to show their support as well.

When the event was launched it was so amazing to see so many companies showing their support by sponsoring the event. Cantu was the title sponsor and there were over 26 other sponsors that helped make the event a success.

The event kicked off with vloggers Sumetra Reed of NaturalMetra and Tiffany Nichols of TiffanyNicholsDesign opening up with an interactive icebreaker that got the crowd mingling.

Constance Cash and MsVaughn welcomed everyone to the event and introduced Chicago’s own Brown Audio who rocked the stage doing 3 numbers including their anthem to the naturalistas of the world, "Ms. Natural". Now of course this couldn't be a complete event with a room full of naturals without doing hair demos, Sumetra and Tiffany came back to the stage with hair models Michelle of Naturalista86 and Andria Childress to showcase a gorgeous DIY flat-twistout and super cute protective hairstyle using Cantu products.

Next up, was a very informative and entertaining panel discussion which featured MsVaughnTV, Afrobella, celebrity makeup artist Alexandra Butler, Shalleen-Kaye of Natural Hair Does Care, and vlogger Donna of Donedo.  The panel was made up of such a diverse group of women with different expertise who were very transparent and open to sharing tips and valuable information on blogging, branding, and business.

The event ended with Meechy addressing her supporters, family, and friends with a speech that moved everyone to tears.  Her strength, faith, and endurance truly shined through and that was such a touching moment. Constance also presented Meechy with a check for $3,500, which was the amount raised from ticket sales for the event, from donations and an additional $1,000 was donated by Courtney Natural Hair, founder of The Mane Choice for a grand total of $4,500.

This event was a total success and a true testament on how powerful the Natural Hair Community is and how Curls can come together for a Cause.

Here's a brief video recap of a few highlights from the event including closing remarks and thank yous from Meechy.
