Jessica Simien - Natural Hair Journey story + pics

No one ever believes me when I tell them this, but I kind of went natural on accident. I was transitioning under a sew-in and didn’t even realize it! I’ve gone through several “phases” with my hair, mostly because I get bored very quickly and I get these urges to change my look. I’ve worn my hair in long layers, short layers, roller wraps, bone straight, curly, I’ve tried just about every style Rihanna has worn except the shaved side stuff, I had a weave addiction, got over it and started it up again. I was wearing a sew-in for a few months and I didn’t pay much attention to the new growth I had because I’d take the extensions out and put them right back in without so much as a 24-hour break in between installations. I knew several girls that had gone natural but I was so ignorant about the process at the time, I thought the only way I could do it was to cut off all my hair so I never entertained the idea until I left my hair out for a few days.

I noticed how wavy and pretty the roots of my hair were and I started asking my natural friends for advice on letting the relaxer grow out. I went a step further and started watching YouTube videos about other women who had gone natural (who knew that there were so many YouTube videos about it!??) and NikkiMae2003 was the YouTube user who convinced me to start my journey.

I tried to transition but I hated having half curly, half straight hair...not cute! So, I bought a few products, including a pair of hair scissors and I did my big chop in my upstairs bathroom on April 13, 2011. I fell completely in love with my hair.

Almost three years later, I’m still natural and I’ve had some really big hits and misses with my hair. I experienced a tremendous amount of growth between my big chop and year two. After year two, I got lazy and stopped caring for my hair like I should and I experienced lots of breakage and damage because of my laziness. I also went through some tough times and I’m sure stress had something to do with it too. I used to think it was because I’d colored my hair a lot, but it wasn’t because of that.

I’m in the process of creating a new regime to fit my lifestyle and I’m enjoying learning my hair all over again. I write about my hair all the time on my blog, www.JessicaSimien.com, so be sure to check there for styles!

Products I’ve Used (all the ones I can remember LOL):
    •    Extra Virgin Olive Oil
    •    Black Castor Oil (hate the smell so I don’t use it often)
    •    Coconut Oil
    •    Aloe Vera Oil
    •    Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding (hated it and gave it away)
    •    Cholesterol + Tea Tree Conditioner (can’t remember the brand but I think this is what made my hair grow so quickly in the beginning)
    •    Cantu Moisturizing Cream Shampoo (used for the first two years of my journey and then it started making my hair really dry and brittle all of a sudden)
    •    Cantu Leave-In Conditioner
    •    Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie (I get the BEST twist-outs with this)
    •    Shea Moisture Restorative Conditioner
    •    Cream of Nature Argan Oil Shampoo
    •    Cream of Nature Argan Oil Leave-In Conditioner Spray (smells good but my hair frizzes really bad with this)
    •    Raw Shea Butter (makes my hair baby soft – I love it!)
    •    Curls Passionfruit Control Paste
    •    EcoStyler Gel
    •    Suave Moroccan Oil Conditoner (BEST CONDITIONER EVER!!!)
    •    IC Fantasia Heat Protecting Serum/Spray

My Hair Facts
    •    I co-wash my hair once every week. I hardly ever use shampoo.
    •    I don’t style my hair while it’s wet.
    •    I blow dry my hair before I do my twist outs.
    •    I don’t straighten my hair at all; I’ve done it twice in the last three years.
    •    I don’t know my “official” hair texture, but it’s more wavy than curly.
    •    I love using flexi rods and perm rods but I’ve also used paper to curl my hair as well.
